Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability | The Comics Journal: "They have brushes for the buffalo and shears for the goat. They won’t trim a Mahar’s [untouchable’s] hair—they’d rather cut his throat.

Early in Bhimayana, a boy named Bhim experiences the world through violence. Bhim is a Mahar, an untouchable. He knows it’s no fun being one. His gentle face and Bambi eyes in the comic’s version are nobody’s idea of a kickass superhero, but when he grows up Bhim will become exactly that."

Language in India

Language in India: " INTRODUCTION

English has been with India since the early 1600's, when the East India Company started trading and English missionaries first began their efforts. A large number of Christian schools imparting an English education were set up by the early 1800's. The process of producing English-knowing bilinguals in India began with the Minute of 1835, which officially endorsed T.B. Macaulay's goal of forming "a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern - a class of persons, Indians in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinion, in morals and in intellect" (quoted in Kachru 1983, p. 22). English became the official and academic language of India by the early twentieth century. The rising of the nationalist movement in the 1920's brought some anti-English sentiment with it -- even though the movement itself used English as its medium."

Globalization and Indian English Writing – Dr. D. Maya

Globalization and Indian English Writing – Dr. D. Maya: "How does culture relate to globalization of markets and economics? Or how do the trends in the money market affect literature and language? These issues have surged to prominence in the current socio-economic and political scenario and should necessarily be addressed. Literature has always been subject to socio-political and economic pressures. The most recent phenomenon has been the emergence of the powerful post-colonial discourse writing back to the entire and asserting its own identity and cultural and national individuality. "

Bhutan’s Happiness Paradigm » Is Sustainability Still Possible?

Bhutan’s Happiness Paradigm » Is Sustainability Still Possible?: "The small nation-state of Bhutan is something of a poster child for a metric of growth and sustainability different from the outdated, but still ubiquitous, Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In contrast to GDP, which depends on money spent, regardless of what it is spent on, Gross National Happiness (GNH) quantifies development in terms of the economy, the environment, and the culture of Bhutan. As a conceptual ideal, GNH seems to satisfy the requirements of sustainability. As a practice, however, GNH is difficult to define, measure, and implement. Bhutan has served as the world’s leader in moving beyond platitudes and towards implementation of a metric of sustainable well-being."

Barefoot Gen, The Atomic Bomb and I: The Hiroshima Legacy :: JapanFocus

Barefoot Gen, The Atomic Bomb and I: The Hiroshima Legacy :: JapanFocus: "
In August 2007 I asked Nakazawa Keiji, manga artist and author of Barefoot Gen, for an interview. Nakazawa was a first grader when on August 6, 1945 he experienced the atomic bombing. In 1968 he published his first work on the atomic bombing—Struck by Black Rain [Kuroi ame ni utarete]—and since then, he has appealed to the public with many works on the atomic bombing. His masterpiece is Barefoot Gen, in which Gen is a stand-in for Nakazawa himself. His works from Barefoot Gen on convey much bitter anger and sharp criticism toward a postwar Japanese politics that has never sought to affix responsibility on those who carried out the dropping of the atomic bomb and the aggressive war (the U.S. that dropped the atomic bomb, and the emperor and Japan’s wartime leaders who prosecuted the reckless war that incurred the dropping of the atomic bomb)."

This site features Columbia University's collection of Ling longmagazine, one of the most complete holdings outside China.

Laos Mine Artist's view

Peter Churcher catalogue

"Entering this village, about 20 kilometres out of Ban Houayxai, was quite an experience. I had never visited such an authentic and remote village as this before.
All the houses were hand constructed from bamboo thatch and the village animals (pigs, goats and chickens) wandered freely about. I felt quite conspicuously 'foreign' as I ventured into this village with my palette in hand. The villagers were just sitting and staring at me with open mouths. I was being followed by my assistants, Phomvihane and Lei, who were carrying the rest of my gear.
In this painting, I wanted to capture the sense of how the local community lived, not as underprivileged or lacking in any way, but as selfsufficient and adhering to a mode of life unchanged and perfectly adapted to their environment."
An excerpt taken from the catalogue comprising the collection:
"Our People, Community and Landscape."

East Timore - Table of Contents

East Timore - Table of Contents: "INTRODUCTION:

This web course is intended as a general introduction to the people, culture, history and politics of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste. While specialists might find the bibliography and web-links[1] useful to some degree, the course is designed for a more general audience, particularly educators who wish to enhance their social science course content with Southeast Asian material. East Timor is after all the youngest, and perhaps least known, nation of Southeast Asia. "

Connecting Women to the Silk Road Main Menu (Women in World History Curriculum)

Connecting Women to the Silk Road Main Menu (Women in World History Curriculum): "Yes, women were there! They were traders, workers in silk manufacture, entertainers, wives of diplomats or merchants who traveled with their husbands or, left at home, held the family and household economy together. There were some well known real life and legendary figures as well, who in diverse ways were vital partipants in east/west exchanges along the Silk Road.

This section offers a variety of ways to incorporate these female experiences into the historical narrative we call the Silk Road, a topic which is widely taught but which largely ignores ways in which women participated alongside men. A primary aim of the section is to link a variety of web resources to the topics introduced."

Tiananmen: The Gate of Heavenly Peace home

Tiananmen: The Gate of Heavenly Peace home: "n the spring of 1989, Chinese students and workers occupied Beijing's Tiananmen Square and began the largest nonviolent political protest in China's history. At the height of the movement, over one million people marched in the streets of Beijing. The movement ended with the government's crackdown and the Beijing massacre of June 4.

Witnessed on television by millions around the world, the Tiananmen protests were one of the most watched, yet least understood, stories of our time. This website explores the origins and history of the protests, the intense international media coverage, and underlying themes such as democracy, human rights, reform and revolution, and nationalism. The site contains articles, essays, and book excerpts, a tour of Tiananmen Square, and a Media Library with posters, photographs, music, and videos."
